HYK: Check your child's notifications... because they not like us!

March 15, 2026 3 minutes

Last November, we noticed that 14 of our (K-2) child's Assignments from 1st quarter were altered in the span of two days in the 2nd quarter. We have been trying to get answers for more than 4 months.

Edit: Specified the harmed child is in the youngest school bracket (K-2).

Updates 3/22/2026: We had the meeting with Digital Discovery and Bellevue School District (BSD405) leadership and received very few answers. ALE monthly reporting rules are in fact active for Digitial Discovery. It appears that this type of activity would represent a circumvention of those guidelines. For this person, harming one of BSD405’s most vulnerable children seems to be more important than their teaching license and DD’s ALE funding.

Without notice or communication, one of our Discovery Staff (presumably) altered 14 of our son’s assignments. All of the work was originally done in the 1st quarter and when we reviewed the assignments all credit hat woas once there had been removed. Around this time, some of the staff in the classroom began behaving erratically so we attempted to meet with Tom Duenwald and his leadership chain to understand what was going on. Our requests to meet were ignored so we removed our child from that situation.

Four months later, while homeschooling we have started to receive incomplete homeschooling kits (again from Tom’s team). We worked around the gaps by buying or finding whatever our child needed to complete their work. After filling the gaps on our own, the staff offered to complete the kits (in one or two of four cases the next day). smh!

After all of this, guess how our kids is doing... All things considered, our kid is killing it!!!
It would be great if they had more role models to lookup to. It is nice that they don't have to navigate problematic adults on their own. Discovery gives me enough clairity to help him navigate these problematic events. We aren't sure why Discovery staff behave this way but in our child's "brick and mortar" school their assignments weren't tracked and their teacher evaluations were far out of alignment with their standardized testing. The "brick and mortar" teacher told us our child was slow at math... COGAT-Quant and StarMath put them in the 98-99%-ile.

They Not Like Us tie-in

From a very high-level, “They Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, speaks to our varying norms with respect to protecting vs harming children. Powerful stuff, enjoy!
